Current Event for the Week of 9/11/06

Bush Urges Congressional Approval of Eavesdropping Program

President Bush is pushing for a program to allow the use of wiretapping on phone calls of suspected terrorists. He contends that his administration's policies on national security have made America safer since 9/11 and defends his position on the war in Iraq. The President strongly disagrees with a Supreme Court ruling against the wiretapping and says it is necessary in order to protect our country against terrorists.

What do you believe? Is wiretapping necessary for our protection, or is it a violation of our privacy. Weigh in with your thoughts.

I think that wiretapping is necessary for our nation's protection. Wiretapping is a way that will help to find possible terrorists. It's going to find every single suspected terrorist, but it has and will work to find him or her.
It's not a violation of our privacy because the government is doing their job of protecting our nation. The government isn't going to listen to your phone call to your great grandma Sue; they are going to listen to phone calls of people that are considered to be possible terrorists.

Wiretapping is not necessary for our nations protection. It is an invasion of peoples personal privacy and that wiretapping is not needed for peoples personal privacy. Would that moniter calls from different Minority's only to ensure that a terrorist couldn't be the majority. Unless it was completly randomized it would do nothing but infringe on ones personal rights.

If you look at the article, it states "The 2001 program secretly authorized the National Security Agency to monitor phone and e-mail communications between people in the United States and suspected terrorists abroad without first obtaining a warrant."
The FBI and the government aren’t going to just listen to anyone's conversations. If you call a number in Baghdad, and it's a number that the US considers to be the number of a terrorist, your call will be tapped. If you call your grandma, the FBI could careless.

I agree with keitaro's comment (if you give a mouse a cookie). the government is not a kindly system. you are more likely to be hurt by the terrorists in our own government than people attacking us. how many of us have made a comment the could be taken the wrong way and even make us sound like a terrorist people joke about bombs and things like that all the time. eventually people will be afraid to say anything against the government for fear of being called a terrorist.

the government is taking advantage of everyones over active fear of terrorism to place invasive programs that violate the rights of people. most of you seem to have this innocent veiw of the government as though everything they do is just and motivated by what is good for the country. they are not all nice guys the more power they have to invade our personal live the more they can munipulate and control people. will they try to control you specifically, no. they will however be able to threaten all people in positions of power such as your boss or other politicians with things they have said. those people could then negatively affect your life. to some this may seem a paranoid concept. i however think you dont realize how plausable it is.
