Current Event for Week of 9/11/06

Some colleges evicting suicidal students

Schools say it sends a message, critics argue it keeps
kids from getting help
A 19-year-old depressed college girl who attempted
suicide by downing handfuls of Tylenol, then called
911, was thrown out of Hunter college because by her
actions she violated her housing contract.
In the past few years, colleges have been trying to
come up with ways in which to decrease the some 1,100
dorm resident suicides every year, and decide what are
the appropriate actions to take when suicide is being
attempted. Specifically, Hunter College in New York,
has disposed of a 3-year-old suicide policy due to the
allegations that evicting students from dorms violates
federal law protecting those disabled from
discrimination.
There seems to be 'no right answer.'

Will policy scare students from getting help?
What should be the roles of colleges?
What are the proper precautions colleges should take
control of in order to stop these individuals from
thinking that they have only one alternative?
When should colleges step in when they notice a
depressed pupil?

Does Hunter College's actions--ditching the suicide eviction policy--send the message that attempting to commit suicide is a disability?

Strange...

having a mental condition is often embarassing for the person affected. kicking them out of school for a condition they cant control would add punishment to their humility. it would be better if the schools just provided rehabilitation programs for the students instead of trying to get rid of them to keep it from being their problem.

I think that the policy to throw students on the street will scare some away from getting help or scare ones to get help. Also I think colleges should keep a close eye on at risk students and students that have attempted suicide before.
Colleges should step in when there is a student looking for help and have a tougher suicide watch program.

I agree with que-aye-f when he says "I think colleges should keep a close eye on at risk students and students that have attempted suicide before.
Colleges should step in when there is a student looking for help and have a tougher suicide watch program."
Colleges should offer some sort of program for students who are not only considering suicide, but for those who are having a hard time.
