Critics denounce Pizza Hut reading program

You've read the book, now eat the pizza. Since 1985, that's been the gist of Pizza Hut's Book It, an incentive program used by 50,000 schools nationwide to reward young readers with free pizzas. The program is now under attack by child-development experts who say it promotes bad eating habits and turns teachers into corporate promoters.

Read the article here.

Do you think Pizza Hut is the cause of childhood obesity? How do you feel Book It helps, or harms our yungsters of today? Does the educational aspect of Book It out weighs the pizza unhealthy reward? Please comment and voice your oppinion because I know all of us participated in Book It.

I use to love to read when i was younger because i would always get free pizzas from pizza hut.. i have noticed that it was addicting..but you have to know when to limit yourself and when i was younger i was a hog and this would not help much. Though its only a little size pizza!!!

Pizza Hut is not contributing to childhood obesity. This program they run to encourage reading has so many benefits. Most children will eat pizza anyway, provided by their parents, so it makes no difference except the kids can say they earned it.

Personally, I loved doing the Book It because I got free pizza, and it did encourage me to read! Who knows: without Book It, some kids may not ever learn to read.

Childhood obesity is more the fault of parents and poor health education than Pizza Hut. You can't blame something as widespread as childhood obesity on one food chain; you have to blame McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Arby's, Papa John's... hell, blame every place that sells unhealthy food!

I think that it's ultimately up the parents and schools what children eat. Parents can moderate what their children eat for breakfast and dinner and the school can moderate what students eat for lunch. Pizza, however, is often served at lunches across the country, so it's likely that our schools contribute to childhood obesity by feeding low-priced unhealthy foods to children.

I don't think this is a big deal. I think it's worse that I got a coupon to McDonalds for donating blood. What's that telling you? Donate blood, replace it with cheeseburgers? America runs on incentive to do things. We can't blame Pizza Hut for doing this, as they are attempting to get kids to read while simultaneously driving in new customers. It's the fabric of democracy at work.

I remember doing this when I was a little kid and i loved it. Face it, kid's are goign to eat pizza if they want to (as long as their parents allow it) and just a few pizzas in reward for reading most likely not going to make the child obsese for life. It's more of the parents fault then the schools or Pizza Hut's for doing this. So what, Pizza Hut is just trying to promote their product.

i don't think that this is contributing to the obesity in children. i remember when we used to get those for reading but i don't like reading or pizza so it really didn't motivate me.

Pizza Hut is not contributing to kids being obese. Obviously if its something that they have been doing since 1985 there is something else contributing to obesity. Its not right to take away kids rewards for doing something good especially like reading because its hard to get kids motivated to read. If parents are worried about their childs weight they should help them eat healthier at home, and not eat fast food so much when they are always busy instead of taking away their rewards for doing something good.

Why does everyone blame someone else for their problems or their childrens problems? ! It's not Pizza Hut's fault that kids in American are getting bigger and bigger. Even if you don't read books you're still going to most likely eat pizza. Why should Pizza Hut get blamed for giving kids pizza if they read books ? It's motivating them, to start reading books and getting them interested in reading.

I dont think pizza hut is the cause of obesity. It is a way for children to want to read. I think it encourages kids to want to read a book because they get pizza in return.

It is ridiculous to think that Pizza Hut caused childhood obesity. BookIt has been around since 1985 and if it was that big of an issue, then why was a stop not put to it sooner? The issue of childhhod obesity has been coming up over and over again in recent years because famalies usually aren't capable of sitting down, eating meals together, and splurging to buy the healthy food choices. Kids are becoming more obese because they eat what their parents give them which is usually something to pop into the microwave. Pizza Hut shouldn't be blamed for the faults of us as a society.

Wow people want to help out and then they get critcized for it wow. i dont think they are contributing to that at all. It helps kids with wanting to read. i am so sick of hearing about obesity. let it go if people want to eat let them eat they know what they are doing and the parents can limit what their kids are eating. even without the reading and get a free pizza kids will be kids and they will keep eating the pizza sometimes i think people blows things way out of proportion
