Current Event for the Week of 2/26/07

In New Brunswick, NJ, Ahmed Rashed, a 27 year old doctor admitted to having severed a hand from a cadaver (dead body) as a medical student and giving it to a stripper he befriended. He pleaded guilty to his charge of third-degree theft and was, rather than being charged, put on a fifteen month unsupervised probation, during which time he will not be able to practice medicine. In court, Rashed apologized for his actions, saying he "meant no harm" and that he has outgrown the immaturity he displayed.

Read the article here.

What do you think about what Rashed did? Should his sentence have been greater? Do you think he should ever be allowed to practice medicine again?

I think that cutting off the hand of a dead body and giving it to anyone is disgusting. It is also disrespetful to whoevers body it was. Just because this person was dead doesn't mean it was ok to take their hand. I think that this man should have had a harsher punishment. He says he's outgrown his inmaturity but I don't agree. I think a little jail time would have taught him a lesson.

I agree that removing the hand was disrespectful to the body it came from without permission. He had to of known it was illegal and should not be able to continue in this field. I don't know what person would go to this doctor now, doctors should be people you can trust.

I agree with both of them. Stealing is disrespectful, but even more so when it is from the dead. It should, in all respects, be seen as graverobbing, and he should've been sent to jail. In all respects he should've lost his practicing license for good, as who would want to see someone who steals from the dead? It's their job to help those who can't help themselves, and he broke this vow. That should carry severe punishment.

I feel sympathy for the family of the person that got his hand cut off. I think that if someone is that unprofessional then they should never be able to practice medicine again. I know that if it was my family member that got their hand cut off I would pursue getting the doctors medical license revoked permanetly. I think the the conseguences for the doctors actions will be that no one will want him to be their doctor anymore.

That is pretty sick to give someone a hand from a dead body. I don't think he is immature, just messed up in the head. he should be stripped of his lisence, and his sentence isnt too bad for wht he did.

I don't know what his punishment should be, but unsupervised probation while pursuing a career as a doctor doesn't seem like a strict enough punishment for a medical student who cut a dead body's hand off. Whether he was aware it was illegal to remove part of a body or not, it should be basic instinct to know better than to cut off someone's hand. A doctor, in particular, should be someone with the utmost respect for the human body. If Rashed doesn't conduct himself with behavior appropriate for a doctor, he should no longer have the right to become one.

I think this person's punishment should definitely be more severe. In fact, I think he should definitely lose his job and serve jail time, because something that immature and disrespectful should not be tolerated in any way. He had to have known that what he was doing was wrong... this just shows that he is not capable of holding such a job.

I think that what Rashed did was stupid and the punishment seems about right. It was, indeed, a very stupid thing to do but his license to practice medicine shouldn't be taken away. By punishing him in that way we might be taking a great doctor away from the world just because he befriended a severed-hand-loving stripper. If we punished people permanently for giving severed hands to strippers nobody would be practicing medicine!
