The actual cause of the explosion was just what xcell said. If you read the article, go to Friday's paper, there is a follow up story.
The pipes were probably stolen for cash, and whoever did it had to have known that the house was empty and being renovated.

Anytime that someone steals something from a house and causes it to explode is a pretty big deal.
There really isn't much to say. I assumed it was a gas leak.
