Parents of Caged Children Want Them Back

An Ohio couple are accused of keeping some of their 11 adopted children, ranging from 1-15, in cages less than three feet high. The Gravelles claim that some of the emotionally disturbed children wanted to sleep in the enclosers. Now the couple are fighting for their children back after a social services investigator had taken the children. See how this tragedy ends...

Read the article here.

Do you believe the county should have taken the children away from the Gravelles? Do you think the children really have emotional disturbances and disablities, or do you think Sharen was just saying that? If you had children, would you ever have cages built into a wall for them, just in case they wanted to play in them? Is it fair for the court to send the 19-month-old to an adoption agency? Why or why not?

Yes, the county should have taken the children away from the Gravelles. Some of the children may have emotional disturbances and disabilities but putting them in cages is no way to help their condition. If I had children, I would never build cages for them to play in. It is fair for the court to send the 19-month-old child to an adoption agency. He/She shouldn’t have to grow up in an environment like the Gravelles. Putting children in cages, locked or not, seems like torture to me and so unethical.

i think no matter how messed up the kids could have been, they should have better care, and if that means taking them away then that should be done. the court should just tell the parents that the have mental disablities and are going to be locked up for their own good haha

When I think cage, I think of a contraption that limits one's mobility. There was no lock so the children could go wherever they wished to. It was a simple precaution to see who was out of their individual environment and who was entering an area of interaction and of possible confrontations.
I think the court should give the nineteen month old back to the family so it can carry on with a consistant environment. I believe that an unchanging environment is nearly vital at sucha young stage. The court needs to draw up requirements for the fashion in which the Gravelles "should" (have to) to treat their children. And then give them a chance to fulfill the standards of parenting. If they fail to meet the said standards, then it would be a worthy situation of finding a new home for the children.

I think that the county had a right to take the children away form the parents. there is no reason for the children to be put in cages such as those. I also think however they need to end this case because this has been goin on for a long time and in some ways i think they a making a bigger deal out of it then they should. Evn if the kids had diablities i think that there is no reason to have them in an envoirment such as this. I dont think they should be put in jail for a long time. they should just be told that they cant adopt kids anymore and leave it at that and only have like 2 to 3 years in jail.

In my unprofessional opinion I think that the county should have never given the Gravelles that many children at a time to care for. I think someone at the adoption agencies should have taken a step back and realized that the Gravelles had that amount of children in thier home. If someone would have done their job a little bit better then the Gravelles would have never had the chance to have eleven children living under thier roof in cages.

I'm sure that some of the children had disabilities or mental unstabilities. Even if they all did I think that this still doesn't give anyone the right to have them all sleep in cages at night.

Yes i do think it was right for the county to take the children because i think that under no circumstances should any child ever be placed in a cage! Besides, how is putting them in a cage going to help the childs condition? It wont! I am a very happy person to hear that the kids were taken away from their parents because what they done was not a very good thing. Why would anyone in their right state of mind put a child in a cage? Locked or unlocked!?

also, i think the parents should receive a long time in jail because putting a child in a cage, to me, is torture.

that's all i can think of! HEHE :)

i firmly believe that the children should have been taken away. That is completely unethical to do to your children no matter the reason why. I think that it doesnt matter if they did have mental or emmotional problems, that is still no reason for this type of action to take place. When i am older I would never have this done.

Yeah i think the county should take the kids away from the Gravelles.
- Cages is no way to help the kid's conditions if they had disabilities or not.
- I would never build a cage for my kids to play in. that seems like im putting my dog in a cage while i go away.
- I think it is fair to send the 19 month old to an adoption agency because he should never have to grow up in that same environment.

This is just absolutly crazy!!!...I dont care what the Gravelles say, no matter how disabled the child is, they are people and deserve to have a better life then being stuck in a cage. These children should be put in a much better home then that and i believe that both of the Gravelles should be put in jail and not be allowed to adopt anymore children or have any children...Also...who let them adopt that many kids anyways?! isnt there a limit?

This was completely unethical to lock the children in a cage. Even if some of the kids had mental disabilities, putting them in cages is definitely not the way to solve their problems and keep them under control. The Gravelles simply couldn't control their children and chose the wrong way to try to do so. I definitely would not do that to my children if i had kids, because they aren't learning anything or being raised properly, they are just being controlled like pets. I don't think, however, that the Gravelles should be put in jail for a long time- they should just have their kids taken away and not be allowed to have children.
