Current Event for the Week of 9/21/07

Thief Learned to Steal From Watching TV

Michael W. Hobbs, 36, of Waco, Kentucky was found guilty of 5 counts of burglary. He said he learned how to break into people's homes by watching the TV show "It Takes a Thief", on Discovery Channel. He took what he learned from the show and broke into a string of homes around his neighborhood.

Read the article here.

What do you think of this story? Should the tv people monitor what kind of shows they are putting out for their viewers? Should Discovery Channel really have a show all about how thieves break into houses?

That is crazy how he learned how to break into houses on tv. He learned it so well that he didnt get caught many times. I have never seen that tv show before but I think after what this kid did they need to cancel it.

I think this is extremely funny.

1) It is pretty dumb for there to be a show like this. Of course there are going to be people to do what they say.

2) Can't you just picture the guy like studying every detail about every show in order to try to perform the action, too? It is a very brave experiment.

3) I like this show, but I don't like trouble. So now that I know that their ways do, in fact, work well, I think I can still stay away from breaking in people's houses...

Wow! That guy is smart! Even though he got caught I think that him watching the tv and actually monitoring what to do during a burglary is very smart! I think the article is kinda crazy but cool and whoever put the show on is dumb because evryone knows that people demonstrate what they watch on tv just like wrestling and the show with Johnny Knoxville (not school appropriate to say). People need to put in consideration what to show on tv for the viewres because in a case like this one day it's goin to end very badly if there is a show how to make nuclear bombs becasue we would all die! The show needs to be viewed but not down to the detail or just not at all. I guess I would say people need to stop watching tv as much as they do unless its something thats useful to us like Survivorman!

i dont think they need to cancel it if people arent smart enough to not break into peoples houses and they get caught that's their problem. same goes with the monitering the tv shows thing. I think thats kinda funny that he did that but i also think that show could help people protect themselves from robbers.

I think the story is highly believable. Haven't you ever heard , "Don't try this at home." ...they realize there are people dumb enough to actually try this stuff. They have these shows to inform you how people do what hey do, and how to prevent it. Not to teach you how to do it. I think it's fine for the t.v. people to put those shows on television, the viewers should just be smart enough to listen when they say , "Do not try this at home !" The show that shows you how to break into houses one thing, but how about shows like forensic files, were they show you how to despose of a corps by throwiit in acid, or how to build bombs that could blow up a small city. ...those a the one's that we should really worry about.

I think that there are people out there who like to try things they see on tv even when they are illegal. There are some shows i think should be monitored but you can't punish others when someone does something wrong. Take the show CSI for example, it practically shows murderers what not to do when they kill someone. It is a very educational show and you can learn a lot by watching it!!! I don't think discovery channel show take "It Takes a Thief" off the air because it helps other families know what is unsafe about their homes and it might help them fix it.

I think this is a very interesting story. They probably shouldn't air programs that show how to break into people's house even if they are trying to show how to make your house safer from burglary. I've also heard of people getting idea from horror movies and shows like that so I think they do kind of need to monitor what shows and movies they show on television. It's bad though that someone would actually take a show that's trying to help make houses safer and turn it into their own learning program of how to break into houses.

This story is ridiculous! People should think about what they are doing. Like the tv people, they need to monitor what they put on and think about the concequences of what their tv show is showing! I also dont know if the guy should be arrested on just suspisions. If they had hard evidence then yes he sould be arrested. They didnt have any evidence and the government should do something about the tv show if this is what it is teaching people especially in a world where nothing you do is safe anymore.

i dont think they should cancel the show at all. i think it helps the family see what they need to do to up the security of their home so they are not robbed.

I think they should be allowed to air the show of their choosing on their own network . All that the makers of the show have to do is put a warning on like they do for Jackass, and alot of other shows. Will that stop people from following what the show says? Not all the time, but it is just entertainment and people should be mature and smart enough to be able to watch a television show and not make bad decisions because of them.
