McKinley officials see positives in punishment
McKinley LOST?? According to the Canton Repository, the bulldogs lost their home opener on August 25th, the score being 66-6 MCKINLEY!! Head football coach Brian Cross made a mistake by letting an academically ineligible player play in the LAST play of their first game!

Do you think that the bulldogs should have lost their first game because of the last play? What do you think should happen to the coach for letting the player on the field? What should happen to the player? Do you think the player should be on the bench for most of the season or should he be able to play?

Well I'm a recent student that went to McKinley and I Love it there but if the rules are stated then they shouldn't be broken! The last play didn't even matter because the score was a blowout and they shouldn't of put the ineligible player in no matter how bad he wanted to play. Now they have to face the consequences and I wish that didn't happen. I think the coach should have just a warning for next time because the football team needs him he's the head coach! I think the player should just get all his papers filled out and the coach and player should just get a fare warning for letting it happen. But if it happens again then yes the coach should be suspended and the player on the bench... but who even said that the coach knew he was ineligible?
When it comes to the punishments of last weeks game, i both agree and disagree. I agree that the coach should be punished because he tried to go behind the OHSAA's back and play an ineligible player. I also believe he should be punished because he was not thinking about his own team when he made this decision. He did not think of the consiquences and how he could possibly be hurting his team for the following week. What i disagree on is the punishment put upon player. I do not believe that he should be sitting almost the entire season due to the acts of the coach. How was he supposed to know if he wasn't allowed to play or not? How was he supposed to know if the school had his papers in? I don't think he should be sitting out any games. The coach is the one who did wrong, not the player.
This article is interesting. The student only got in for one play, and the coaches weren't even informed of his grades but rules are rules I guess. I really respect the coach's decision to inform someone about the ineligible player. It really shows that they are trying to set good exaples for the students and players at Mckinley and other schools as well. Its unfortunate though that they still had to follow the consequences and forfit a game that they won by so much and did so well in. If there was any way to get around the punishment I think they should have tried, but it seems like the guidelines and consequences are pretty much set in stone.
no being a player for perry i like seeing that McKinley is starting off at 0-3 but thats not the point in the artical. now on tht topic even if the coach didn't know if he was eligible yet or not doesn't matter when it comes to the punishment of the player.... the only reason the player is suspended for that long is because that is when the next report card would come out. not getting the paper from the other school yet for his eligibility is McKinleys fault but i still see nothing wrong with teh punishment that was given to them.
I think that McKinly should have lost the game because even though it was the last play and at the end of the game, it was still against the rules. The coach probably doesn't have to be suspended, losing the game I think is punishment enough. I think it would make the league look bad though if they didn't do anything against the coach. It's just an unfortunate event and I guess things just happen.
playing a player that is not legible is against the OHSAA's rules. when students are eligible..they have to sit the bench the entire season. it happened to our girls basketball team 2 years ago. number one, it's the coach's fault for letting the student play when he probably knows that he was eligible. number two, the coach deserves the loss because of his actions. and number three, the student and the coach should both be punished for breaking the OHSAA's rules. every athlete has to sign a paper saying they will follow the rules, and this athlete didn't.
I think that although it would be horrible to think that you won the game for a week or so I think it would be worse to find out that you could have done something to stop it. The coach should have been responsible enough to check all of the teams grades and I think the coach and administration should watch for this.
i definatley think that the team should be punished if the ineligible player played during the game. But at the point he went in the game was basically over. I think it was very trustworthy of the coach to turn himself in and get himself a loss they didnt deserve. As far as the coach not being able to coach next against lake, i dont know if the punishment fit the crime. that player may have gone onto the field without the coach even knowing and they both get punished for it. I think that played a big part in the loss against lake on friday.
I think that McKinley should have lost the game because the players and coaches know the rules. The player shouldn't really be benched because the coach should have made the decision to keep him off the field. I think the coach should be suspended from coaching because he knows the rules and if you break them, you should be punished. For example, if you're speeding, and a police officer pulls you over, you get a ticket. There's nothing you can do about it. You know the law, so don't break it!!!
