Hate crime charge for suspect in 101-year-old's mugging
A man accused of beating and mugging a 101-year-old woman and two others was arraigned Saturday on charges that included hate crimes. Jack Rhodes, 44, was held without bail on charges of robbery, grand larceny, burglary and assault.
What do you think this man's punishment should be? How do you think these types of people contribute to society, if at all? Do you think this act was a hate crime?

im not sure what his punishment should be. that is up for the courts and jury to decide. it was wrong for him to do that to a 101 year old woman. hes not contributing to society at all.
I'd like to correct Goddess, because this man IS contributing to society. Without idiots like him we'd have no reason for law enforcement, so be glad that people like him are employing cops.
I think he should be sent to jail for bout a year because it was burgarly and assault and i think the only way he was contributing to our society was keeping the cops busy.
The article mentioned that dozens of detectives were on this man's trail. I hope that is just an exaggeration. The maximum penalty he can get is 25 years, and dozens of detectives implies at least 24 people. That means it is possible to have had more cops on his case than years for punishment. To me, that seems a little excessive. I know that this man committed a terrible crime, but I don't see why he needed that many people on his case. I'm sure that the NYPD could have reassigned those detectives to some case that was more difficult and more pressing. Does anyone know the actual number of police assigned to this case? I'm interested in finding out.
This man did contribute to society in some way or another, the question is whether or not his overall contributions are positive or negative, and to what extent they effect society. The answer to that questions depends on the definition of societal contribution. I'm sure that this man did some positive things in his life, it's not like he robs old women every time he steps on the streets.
Whether or not this man's crime is a hate crime depends on a definition, as well. I don't think he did it out of spite for the woman, or old people for that matter. He probably targeted the woman because she was an easy target, not because he hates the elderly.
