I don't think there was anything that the school could have done to prevent it. I think that VT handled it as well as they could have. They will definately be having more protection, and take more caution. But for as quickly as it happened, I think they did a fair job because no one really expects something like that to happen at their school.

ok there was a shooting like 2 hours or an hour before and some one had already died then the same killer came to the college and shot more so yes i think after the first shooting they should have had a lock down or had the campus evacuated before he came back. They better take more precautions because 31 students being killed is absolutly retarted and it shouldn't of been that many students to begin with.

I don't think there could have been anything that the college could have done to prevent this event because they said he had pretty graphic writting but that usually isn't something to get hot and bothered about. Plus they said he got really good grades and all. They probably should stick to high security though.

I think that the school should have been a little more prepared for a situation like this. the police did do their job in hadeling the situation as best as they could. i think that there should have been more done then just sending out an email to people to stay in their rooms because not all people check their email daily

i don't think that the college could have done anything else. if anything maybe evacuate the school or something? maybe now they will have like better cameras or something or better security. i think they should do that for the future.

The shootings happened... that's that and it seems like everyone wants to point the blame at the school for not warning the students after the first incident. They thought the danger had passed and made a decision... if they would have locked down for no reason, they would be criticized for that.

Also, schools across the nation have been affected by this shooting... threats are showing up everywhere and closing school down. even right around here at Edison. Some students seem to be taking advantage of panic and using Virginia Tech to threaten the safety of others.

In a dream world, I wish things like this would never happen. But sometimes they do and nothing can be done.

I saw in the newspaper that the gunman had sent pictures of himself pointing a gun to the camera and holding hammers and a lot of violent things. He recorded him self doing a video of something violent im not sure what it was though. Depending on when they found that something could have been prevented. I also heard some of his projects were very violent and just odd with weird murders and stuff. I think if they maybe would have kept a close eye on him someone could have seen it coming. But i do believe they will definitly increase the security around the campus and i think everywhere else too.

I am not sure if the shooting could be prevented or not but i feel that the situation could have been controlled better. If someone wnats to do something they will find a way to do it wether we like it or not but i think that this much damage did not have to happen. It's sad and you just have to say to yourself what is this world coming to?

I don't think that VT could have done much more about the shooting. By beginning a lockdown when they don't know who or where the killer was is basically just locking everyone inside with someone who has a gun. Granted, if they had security cameras they very likely would have caught him earlier than they did. As a side note, I think that the media was being totally rediculous on the issue by making it a 5 to 6 day coverage event. That is just asking for someone to try and best it, which some people said and caused schools to close.

I wish that there could have been some sort of way to prevent what occured. I think the college wasnt prepared for what happened but how can a college be prepared for a student opening up fire on campus. I also believe that there should be an increase in security on campus until things settle down.

I think nothing could have been done to prevent the shooting. Well they could have some rediculous thing to identify students/faculty or whatever, but someone could still get past that (it's like saying even though there are all the security checkpoints at airports, a terrorist will never be able to get on a plane...it's will happen). I think the school will be a lot more precautious.

They could've done things to prevent this shooting, in my opinion. Instead they ignored the danger that this shooter posed and turned their backs on their duty. It is amusing, though, how now everybody's going to great lengths for safety, when I clearly remember a couple of years ago Edison was threatened with a bloodbath and no one did anything about it. It's very sad that people have to go to drastic measures for others to get off their lazy butts and do their job.

Personally, I don't think there is much anyone can do in situations like this. I do think that something could have been done between the first shooting and the rampage this killer went on. I do think schools will take more precautions now because a lot of kids will want to play copy-cat, or think it's funny. There have already been a few reportings of people ttrying to have school threats, and I think schools will take all threats seriously now

No, i do not think that there was anything that the school could have doen to prevent it from happening the first time. But an hour or two after the SAME GUY came back and killed more people, that they prolly could have prevented!

It is sad that it happened, but there is really nothing we can do except be a little more prepared for the future. So many students are taking advantage of this shooting. Why would anyone want to do such a thing? i just dont understand how these people think!

There wasn't anything that the school could have done to prevent it. They did ther best they could. They thought that the fist incident was the only one because they thought that he ran. Every school is now on high alert for people who might try to copy this psycho.

i dont think VT could have done much more, after all no one can see this sort of thing coming. Plus, isn't VT a really big college? One murder probably isn't enough for the whole school of thousands of students to completely shut down.

I don't think anything could have been done to prevent this tragic event. No one could have been prepared for any kind of incident like this, because no one knew about it except for the gunman. However, I do think that people should take more caution and never take any kind of threats lightly. Even if the person may be joking, the threats that were made should never be taken as a joke. That is the only way to prevent such things from happening again in the future.

The Virginia Tech shootings are obviously a very tragic incident, thus they will have large effects on society.

What scares me the most is that events of this type are unpredictable, so there is no solid way to prevent them. Colleges and universities across the nation are now beefing up their security systems in efforts to prevent a repeat of this incident, but there is no guarantee that these improvements will actually help. I know that the school that I am attending next year is adding around 200 more security cameras to the hundreds that are already placed all over the campus. It makes me sad that a few people (the people responsible for VaTech, Columbine, the Case shootings, etc) can cause so much money to be spent and so much privacy to be invaded.
