Current Events for the week of 4/23

Cat Saves Family From Poisonous Fumes

It seems like the past week is full of horrible anniversaries and birthday's from Columbine to Hitler's birthday to the Oklahoma City Bombings... to Virginia Tech... to our own backyard down at Edison... the list goes on.

We don't always here about the good news so I decided to add something with a little bit more happy side.

A family in Indiana would have tragically lost their lives recently if it wasn't for the efforts of their 14-year old cat. Evidently, a carbon monoxide leak was quickly threatening the family's lives and their cat meowed until they woke up. When they woke up, the family felt dizzy and immediately called 911. The son was found in his bedroom by authorities unconscious, but was quickly revived and the family is now safe at home.

Read the article hear.

What do you think of animals playing the role of savior in our society? Would you like to hear more stories like this instead of all the horrific news stories we see every night on the news?

I think that animals can play a major role in saving our lives and i think that they are important in todays society because we are such a fats past society that we often overlook what is really happening and animals can help us out. I personally am tired of all the sad depressing stories in the news and would like to see more stories like this one!

I think that people don't give animals enough credit because many animals are very smart. Dogs know when bad weather is coming, they run and hide. animals play a major role in being the "watch dog" of the family. That is amazing that a cat can do that because carbon dioxide is not visible and the cat knew it was there so that is very smart.

Animals are smart things in our society and some are even smarter than most humans so i think these animals are jus like us people. I would like to see more things like this happening and i think people just dont really care much about seeing an animal save someone than a human doing it thats why u will barely see this on the news. I think animals are smart enough to do about anything.

I'm sure that almost every person would like to see more "happy stories" in the news, but the "sad ones" are the ones that always seem to make it in the news. Perhaps this is because the "sad ones" make the most noise. They usually consist of deviant acts, so they are seen as more newsworthy. Society doesn't seem to care about people who do what they are supposed to do. Above and below average matter the most.

The question posed here is interesting though. In class, we've learned about the labeling theory and primary and secondary deviance. I think that the recent school shootings and threats can serve as a fairly good example of the theory. Shootings like those that occured at Columbine and VaTech would be examples of primary deviance under the labeling theory. After the original shootings, many people have attempted to mimic the behaviors of the original deviants. Perhaps this is becuase the original shootings are all over the news, and the coverage of the shootings stereotypes people as "insane" or "psycho." Let's say a news station displays a graphic with the "typical characteristics of shooters." It is possible that some person may see the graphic and see some connections between the graphic characteristics and his/her own characteristics. As a result, the person may knowingly or unknowingly try to conform to the graphic and become more like the "shooters."

In short, words are powerful. When we see negative headlines on the news, we tend to feel negative. Sure, it'd be nice to see more positive headlines, but that would require a lot of changing from society.

i dont think us humans give enough credit to animals. they are very smart creatures and most of the time probably know what is going on before us. it is incredible that the cat was able to sense the Carbon dioxide. we are too depressed of a society these days, and need more positive things thrown at us in the news like this.

Everybody says that they want to see more stories like this but in the end, it's statistically inaccurate. People want to know what's going on and the media feeds off of the fear of the target audience.

People only think the world is going to hell because the problems that do exist in the world are glorified because it's a marketable business.

For the record, I do think news stories like this are fun to read. In my last post I didn't mean that I think they're stupid or unnecessary, I just don't think the majority of people actually care about stories of this nature.
