Arguments about hate crime legislation -- pro and con

The laws are fair. A hate crime is more serious than a conventional crime because it abuses more than the immediate victim. When a criminal act is based on a factors such as a victim's race, gender, sexual orientation or religion, it takes on some of the characteristics of a terrorist act. The victim and the perpetrator are typically strangers.

I think hate crimes do have sufficient punishments because they are just like any other crime, and should be punished like any other crime. The only difference is the crime is personal. It is targeting a certain person, or group. By punishing someone in a hate crime, it doesn't erase what they said or did. Most of the time it won't even effect how that person think's or feel's about the situation at all. So why punish someone harsher as revenge. It won't change what happened. So just punish the hate crime as any other crime, regardless how personal.

I think that hate crimes are the same as any other crime and should be punished in the same way. The difference between a hate crime and crime is that hate crimes are personal; however, if other crimes can also become personal. If someone dies because they are hit by a drunk driver, the family of the victims are personally affected. I think that punishments are sufficient, and that all crime should be handled the same reguardless of what the "reason" for the crime is.

I agree with punishing the hate crimer as you would any other person commiting a crime. They both can be as personal or as unpersonal as the other.

A crime is a crime, no matter how you look at it and people committing hate crimes should be punished just as they should, like someone who committed a crime. There's a lot of crimes that aren't classified as hate crimes that some people can take personally. It's just based on someones opinion. I don't think the personal level should effect the severity of the punishment. It's still a crime.

i think hate crimes are a complete joke. God wanted us all to be equal. He didn't want us to devise a group of hate towards certain people. there should be harsher punishment for hate crimes because they would induce violence just so the group they hate is hated. it is a verbal attack against race and ethnicity and it is very personal.

hate crimes are the same as the rest of the crimes and should be punished. Even though I don't think the punishment will take care of the problem because I don't think it will stop people from hating against other for being different. We will always have people with different beliefs and ways of living, but if we had more severe punishments for hate crimes maybe we could stop the hate by really working to help those accused to see what they are doing is wrong and that no one should be discriminated against for factors they have no control over.

I think that hate crimes and regular crimes are should be treated the same. Whether its personal or unpersonal, they should both still be punished the same. They both hurt people and should get equal punishment for it.

I think that a hate crime is the same as any other crime. It should be charged the same as another crime. I don't think that a harsher punishment for hate crimes will change anything. All crimes should be charged the same

I think that hate crimes should be punished more then a normal crime. Because of the damage it causes to society and minorities or in some cases the majority.

I think that punishments fr hate crimes should definatley be more severe than that of a regular crime. There is really no room in the world for prejudice people and hate crimes are just horrible acts of these prejudice people. If anything you could make the punishments more severe but definatley dont lessen the punishments.

i think that hate crimes do have sufficent punishments, because they are like any crime. But, in my opinion, hating someone is technically allowed accoridng to the first ammendment to a certain extent. If you hate someone, keep it to yourself. We don't really need to change anything.
