Texas death row inmate commits suicide

Michael Johnson was a convicted killer that was facing the lethal injection in Texas. Fifteen hours before he was supposed to be killed he was found in his cell in a pool of blood. Johnson committed suicide by slitting his throat and wrist. He used a sharp peice of metal attached to what seemed to be a wooden popsicle stick. It is apparant that Johnson had written words on the walls but the autorities will not release what they were. Johnson is at least the 7th person to commit suicide before the planned tiem to be put to death since death row reopened in 1974 in Texas.

What was the purpose of committing suicide? Wouldn't it have been easier, and less painful, for him to just take the lethal injection? Do you find it strange that the guards didn't notice anything?

Favre Rips NFL for how it treated Robinson

The Green Bay Packers quarterback Brent Favre criticizes the NFL on how they handled the substance abuse of Koren Robinson. Robinson was suspended for the season for a drinking charge. They made him clean out his locker and told him he cannot have contact with his teammates and they can't have contact with him. Robinson was in the NFL's substance abuse program, which doesn't allow people participating to use alcohol. When he was arrested, his alcohol level was 0.11 percent, which is above the legal limit.

Yankees pitcher killed in crash of small plane in Manhattan

Moments after the single-engine plane slammed into the New York City high-rise, military and other federal officials were on a conference call assessing the situation. Minutes later, fighter aircraft were circling at least a half-dozen cities, prepared to shoot down airborne intruders.

Current Event for 10/16/06

Dad kept boy in prison of cameras, police say

A man in Jacksonville, Florida is charged for torturing his 9 year old son. The man kept his son locked in the room for 3 years without school or medical attention. Randall Warren Piercy, 41 was the father. He taped everything that his son did in the room. The kid was home school, but couldn't read children books. The father only let the son go to the bathroom once a day because he wanted to teach him to controll his body. He was charged with charges of aggravated child abuse in the torture, malicious punishment and unlawful caging of the boy. The mother recieved no charges.

Jobless man asks judge for jail time

A man who couldn't find steady work came up with a plan to make it through the next few years until he could collect Social Security: He robbed a bank, then handed the money to a guard and waited for police.
On Wednesday, Timothy J. Bowers told a judge a three-year prison sentence would suit him, and the judge obliged.

Bush administration hopes to quell school violence

The Bush administration held a conference regarding the latest wave of school shootings. Questions were posed to the President concerning the governments control (or lack of control) concerning weapons.

Current Event for Week of 10/2/06

Officials: Inmate got 'Katie's Revenge' tattoo by force

An inmate serving a life sentence for molesting and murdering a 10-year-old girl named Katie was apparently forcibly tattooed across the forehead by a fellow prisoner with the words "KATIE'S REVENGE," authorities say.
Anthony Ray Stockelman, 39, was removed from the general prison population for his own safety last weekend after authorities discovered the tattoo, officials said.
Prison officials said an inmate has been identified as a suspect.
A photo of what is identified as Stockelman's forehead appeared this week on a crime blog called "Lost In Lima Ohio" that focuses on news reports about crimes against children and women.
